Dec 18, 2007 - Recognize Achievements
As we work our way through the Toastmasters program, we want to feel as if
we have accomplished something.
If your VPED is doing his or her job, they'll be on top of when a communication or leadership goal has been met and can prepare accordingly.
After an ice breaker, give the speaker a standing ovation while they make their way back to their seat. It can take a lot of courage to stand up before a group for the first time.
You may also want to do this once someone completes their Competent Communicator manual or presents the last module required for their Advanced Leader Silver award. You could also give them a certificate acknowledging their achievement.
This positive reinforcement will let the speaker know that their efforts are being recognized, in turn ensuring a high level of self-esteem and making it more likey the member will be committed to the club.
It costs very little to recognize when a goal as been met, but can be very valuable to the recipient.
