Dec 16, 2007 - Giving Effective Evaluations
Do you think evaluators could do a better job at giving you feedback?
Are your evaluations falling short of the mark?
Here are some do's and don't that you can use, as an evaluator, to make your
evaluations more effective
Don't repeat the speech - we've already heard it
Do pick out key phrases that impacted you and tell us why
Don't judge the speakers content
Do concentrate on how the speaker presents and delivers the speech
Don't whitewash and give false flattery to the speaker
Do pick recognize and praise the speaker for improvements you have noticed
Don't come to the meeting without knowing who and what you'll be evaluating
Do contact your evaluator a few days before to find out their objectives and
goals for this particular speech
Don't lose concentration and get lost in the speech
Do give the speaker your full attention. You're an evaluator not a member of
the audience this time
Don't use negative words and phrases like "You should", "You must", "You didn't"
Do use positive phrases such as "I suggest", "I would like to see you do..."
Don't leave the speaker without examples of how the speech or delivery could be improved
Do always follow up your suggestions with a specific example
Don't end the evaluation once you leave the lecturn
Do follow up with items you didn't have time for and answer questions the
speaker may have
There are many ways you can improve your evaluations. These are just a few that
you can incorprate into your next evaluation. Let us know if you have more
evaluation tips that we can include in a few weeks.
